Update 5 (September 13, 2005): Steve Vaught, the Fat Man Walking, has finally reached Texas and hollywood is beginning to make better time, with a one-day record of 25 miles now. He’s shooting hollywood for Oklahoma City, the midpoint of his trek. His pack only weighs 30 pounds now; he’s been able to jettison some of his gear because the weather is milder, and he doesn’t hollywood need to carry as much water because it’s not as far between stores as it had previously been. He had himself weighed on a truck scale. Truck scales can weigh loads up to 100,000 pounds, but their accuracy is only ±5 pounds or so. Steve’s weight comes in at 335–340 pounds or thereabouts. Apparently Steve has had it with the press, which accounts for the relative dearth of newspaper articles about him recently.
