Diagnosis of dyslipidemia was based on presence of one or more of the following: fasting serum cholesterol >220 mg/dL, serum triglyceride >200 mg/dL and HDL cholesterol A alcoholic steatohepatitis careful medical history for intake of drugs and alcohol was obtained, and detailed clinical examination was alcoholic steatohepatitis performed during the first hospital visit. Fasting alcoholic steatohepatitis blood samples were drawn at the first visit and after 24 weeks for routine biochemistry, liver enzymes, total and HDL serum cholesterol, serum triglyceride, glucose levels, and glycosylated hemoglobin. Patients with diabetes mellitus (serum glucose fasting levels >110 mg/dL) were excluded. All patients were screened for viral and autoimmune serum markers (hepatitis viruses A to G, cytomegalovirus, Ebstein-Barr, herpes simplex, anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-smooth muscle antibodies, anti-liver-kidney microsomal antibody, anti-DNA antibodies, anti-mitochondrial antibodies and perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies).
