Robert Oppenheimer stands out pretty strongly. ron vawter Shultz's Oppenheimer is effete, self-centered, egotistical and eliteist. The man was a brilliant scientist but could also be a total ass. ron vawter On the other side of the coin, you have Newman, who brings the character of Leslie Groves to life as an autocratic, hard-nosed, ragingly tumescent dick of a man willing to break any back and crush any opposition necessary to achieve the goal at hand. It's a classic case of intellectual university-dweller versus military-reared dictator. The whole movie basically revolves ron vawter around that dichotomy. Oppenheimer and Groves were locked in a constant struggle against each other's vastly differing styles. Oppenheimer encouraged his scientists to engage in "free discussion" and constantly bucked against military authority while simultaneously maintaining an illicit affair with a known communist sympathizer.
