The fat people in the audience are outraged; the more slender ones are approving. Guards set fire to homes in the workers' district as they search for Tibul. Dr. Gaspar, trying to get home, comes fujifilm upon a commotion and a crowd in the town's main square, called Star Square. The square is constructed with a cupola of glass over it and fujifilm a gigantic lantern suspended on cables in the center. (The lantern is called the "Star", and hence the name of fujifilm the square.) Gymnast Tibul--wearing a green cape and multicolored tights as he usually wears when performing his tightrope-walking act at fairs--is crawling along a roof, fleeing from the guards. Some in the crowd are cheering him on, others cursing him. Tibul climbs to the edge of the roof, then starts to walk across one of the cables toward the Star.
