The bombing of Nagasaki on August 9th was the last major act of World War Two and within days the Japanese had surrendered. Two senior bgirl American military figures - General bgirl Groves and Admiral Purnell bgirl - were convinced that two atomic bombs dropped within days of the other would have such an overwhelming impact on the Japanese government that it would surrender. Scientists at Los Alamos were also intrigued as to which type of bomb was the better - a uranium or plutonium based bomb. 'Little Boy' showed its effectiveness at Hiroshima but another bombing mission was needed to see what damage a uranium bomb could do. |

| The plutonium contained amounts of plutonium 240, an isotope with a rapid atomic nucleus spontaneous fission rate. This necessitated that a different type of bomb be designed. A gun-type bomb would not be fast enough to work. Before the bomb could be assembled, a few stray neutrons would have been emitted from the spontaneous fissions, and these would atomic nucleus start a premature chain reaction, leading to a great reduction atomic nucleus in the energy released. Seth Neddermeyer, a scientist at Los Alamos, developed the idea of using explosive charges to compress a sphere of plutonium very rapidly to a density sufficient to make it go critical and produce a nuclear explosion.
