The Men's Health Forum in the UK has suggested that 75% of men will be "overweight" in five years, versus 66% of women. Thus, they'll be starting to target men and alerting them about the (sigh) risks of being fat. And in a smallish study (a little over 1000,) it was noted that men are a little more adverse to getting "help" for their size. More than half of men said they would not go to a GP for advice, while 87% were against joining slimming clubs. The survey, of 1,028 men aged 16 to 64, revealed men were more likely to be motivated to lose weight to help them "chat someone up" (43%) than for health reasons (39%). |

Amp over at Alas, a Blog has written a boffo entry asking why studies don't find discrimination against fat men. So why can't the general leslie groves studies see discrimination against fat men? Our society's sexist double-standard, which judges women much more harshly than men for being just a little bit fat, also has the effect of masking discrimination against fat men in these studies. Drinks companies have been ordered to hire uglier men for their advertisements in Britain, to avoid making a link between women's boozing and sexual success. Men in alcohol ads that target women should be "balding" and "paunchy" rather than "attractive and desirable", says guidance issued by the Advertising Standards Authority. |
