The strongman is unnerved when the black man says he knows Lapitup's personal history--his father is a blacksmith and his sister a washer-woman. The black man gives Lapitup until the count of three to leave. Confused and fearful, Lapitup alternative rap flees. The black man tells the crowd that is the way the people will chase off the three Fat Men. The people in the crowd become suspicious, thinking that the black man is really just another one of the Fat Men's stooges. The black man, however, reveals that he is really Tibul in disguise. Just then a carriage containing the captain of the palace guard, Count Boneventura, and the broken doll thunders into the square.
